Pake sets personal best in 3200

Greensburg — Greensburg freshman Shelby Pake placed 17th in the 3200-meter race at the Hoosier State Relays Saturday with a new personal best time of 12:26.77.

The top 24 track athletes across the State of Indiana were invited to compete against one another in their respective events at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.

Pake’s championship 3200m race at the EIAC Indoor Invitational (where she was just eight seconds from setting a new meet record) qualified her for the Hoosier State Relays.

With this performance, Pake is the fourth-fastest 3200-meter runner in Greensburg girls track history. The third-ranked female runner is Angie Doles with a time of 12:26.5.

During the HSR race, Pake competed against many 2012 Outdoor State Finalists, including West Lafayette senior Bobbie Burgess, who was crowned the 2013 HSR 3200m champion.

Katina Tekulve, Pake’s coach, said she was impressed not only with Pake’s performance, but her demeanor.

“What is most exciting is Shelby ran outstanding against many 2012 Outdoor State Finalists, and raced more like a veteran than a freshman,” said Tekulve.

Pake’s track teammate, freshman Taylor McIntosh, also qualified for HSR in high jump for her 4-foot-8 performance at the EIAC Indoor Invitational. McIntosh elected not to compete as it conflicted with the Boys Basketball Semi-State game.
