Richmond —
The Greensburg boys basketball program extended its historical season by going where no Pirate basketball team has gone before.
Greensburg increased its school-record win total to 25 with a 62-37 pounding of top-ranked Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in front of 8,100 at Richmond’s Tiernan Center. The South Semi-State victory not only secured a first-ever trip to the Class 3A State Championship, but also signaled a second straight win over a top-five team with a 24-1 record.
Head coach Stacy Meyer’s squad has dominated in the postseason, enjoying a lead for nine consecutive quarters while winning all six games by double digits.
From the opening possession, the Pirates overwhelmed the Marauders with their signature sharp-shooting arsenal. The defense also smothered the opposition, forcing the Marauders to match their season-low scoring output.
Following the game, several fans gathered in the Greensburg gym to greet the Semi-State champions when they returned to the school.
The Pirates (25-1) will play seventh-ranked Fort Wayne Concordia (23-4) for the state championship Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 6 p.m.
