Greensburg —
The Greensburg boys basketball team remained unbeaten at home this season with a 68-50 win over Rushville Friday night.
The Pirates improved to 15-1 with their fourth straight win. The combination of four different scorers in double figures and a 24-12 third-quarter edge lifted the second-ranked team in the Associated Press Class 3A poll.
Defense and transition points helped Greensburg pull away from a hot-shooting Lion squad in the second half. The Pirates trailed 6-1 early, but went on an 8-0 run that was punctuated by a slam dunk from junior Sean Sellers. It was 29-27 when the teams went into the half.
The Lions' perimeter shooting produced eight 3-pointers, and the visitors stayed prolific offensively to prevent a Greensburg runaway until the third quarter.
"I'm really proud of the kids the way they responded in the second half," said Greensburg head coach Stacy Meyer. "Give Rushville credit. They took stuff away from us...you want to be faced with adversity and hopefully they respond to that, and I thought we did tonight."
Meyer was pleased with Greensburg's ability to score in transition as the momentum changed with big plays in the second half.
"We finished defensive possessions with block-outs, rebounded and came up with 3-pointers and easy baskets in transition," he said.
Sellers led all scorers with 20 points. He added eight rebounds and shot 6-for-8 from the foul line.
Junior Bryant McIntosh scored 13 points, while sophomore Ryan Welage and junior Collin Rigney each followed with 12. Rigney shot a trio of 3-pointers. Junior Macy Holdsworth added his own triple and scored five points. All three seniors scored as Tyler Burcham tallied three points, Shane Ploeger added two and Riley Billieu chipped in one.
Nate Hoeing led Rushville with 18 points and four 3-pointers.
The Greensburg junior varsity team survived and came away with a 51-50 victory.
Tye Fleetwood led his team with 13 points, including a 5-for-6 effort from the foul line. Brad Wilson scored 12 and shot 2-for-3 from the line. Josiah Buell (4-for-6) scored 10, while Kevin Beaver scored six. Riley Burkert and Drew Foster each added four, while Tom Lawrence shot 2-for-2 from the line.
Greensburg shot 15-for-19 (79 percent) from the stripe overall.
