Pirate girls honor seniors in win

Greensburg — The Greensburg girls varsity basketball team secured a winning season Tuesday against visiting Jac-Cen-Del, capturing a 48-41 victory on Senior Night.

The Lady Pirates improved to 11-9 while honoring seniors Audrey Geis, Heidi Dance, Clare Owens, Shelby Ward, Hayley Williams and Lillie Wolter.

Greensburg won six of its last seven games.

In the starting lineup were Owens, Dance, Wolter, freshman Taylor McIntosh and sophomore Jessica Banaschak.

After jumping out to a 9-0 lead, Greensburg’s stout defense rose up and helped head coach Mike Miller’s team hold off an Eagle rally.

Greensburg head coach Mike Miller said he was pleased to see the defense step up when the offense became stagnant in the second half. Greensburg held the Eagles to eight points during a key stretch after halftime.

“I’m really happy with what kind of defense we’ve become,” he said.

Senior Clare Owens scored a team-high 11 points, including seven in the first half and a key 3-point play late in the game. She also led the team in rebounds.

“Owens played a great game,” said Miller. “She was all over the floor.”

Sophomore Abbey Denton scored 10 points. Denton added a trio of first-half 3-pointers, helping Greensburg enter the half leading 29-19.

Sophomore Jessica Banaschak scored eight points, while freshman Keauna Schultz scored a career-high seven points. Senior Shelby Ward added six and senior Heidi Dance scored four. Freshman Taylor McIntosh chipped in two.

Miller pointed out Schultz’s development as an increasing contributor on varsity.

“She is understanding more and more how to play at the varsity level,” he said. “She is real strong and aggressive.”

Miller also credited the overall execution in the past month.

“We’re making better decisions, better ball movement and spacing. We’ve been consistent defensively since before Christmas. The kids have done a great job in our zone defense. We don’t make very many mistakes in coverage in the zone.”

The Greensburg junior varsity squad finished 6-14 with a 26-18 loss to JCD. Megan Schmidt paced her team with seven points, including 5-for-8 from the foul line. Kalynne Asche scored six, while Emma Wolter added three. Maddie Schroeder chipped in two.
