Greensburg —
The Greensburg varsity wrestling team turned in another solid performance in its latest outing Saturday at the Brown County Invitational.
The Pirate grapplers finished third out of six teams, going 3-2 on the day.
Greensburg defeated Oldenburg 72-6, Indianapolis Arlington 66-12, lost to Northview 35-34, lost to Brown County 39-38, and defeated Indian Creek 39-31.
Six wrestlers recorded at least four wins, while 11 won multiple matches.
Senior John Cook and junior Joe Buening each 5-0 on the day.
Going 4-1 were senior Chaz Smiley, junior Joel Chase, junior Colten Black, junior Drew Neisius, and junior Matt Scheumann, while senior Justin Dance went 3-1.
Sophomore Nathan Hayes and freshman Travis Gauck each went 3-2.
Freshman Brandon Butz, sophomore Jordan Smiley and freshman Dakota Deiwert each added two wins.
Head coach Matt Cochran applauded the wrestlers afterward.
“Overall, we came so close to winning the championship,” said Cochran. “It’s frustrating to come so close, to lose two matches by one point. There were so many places we could have picked up those points, so we’re disappointed we did not come away with the championship. We are encouraged that we’re wrestling better, but we had goals to win a trophy today and that did not happen. Overall, though, the guys are wrestling hard. We are getting better, and we look forward to our match with Batesville Tuesday, and our tournament Saturday at Tri.”
