Greensburg —
The Greensburg football team advanced to the sectional championship game for a second straight year after a 14-0 shutout of Batesville Friday night at Shriver Field in Greensburg. The Pirates, who led the entire game of the Class 3A Sectional 22 Semifinal, will host Indian Creek Friday at 7 p.m. for the crown.
The final score did not indicate how much control the Pirates exerted over the Bulldogs. The Pirates ran more than twice as many plays and took the wind out of their sails with drive-stopping defense and frequent takeaways.
The home team improved to 9-2 and has tallied the most wins in a season under head coach Scott Moore.
Greensburg kicked off to start the action. Following a Bulldog fumble on the first play from scrimmage, senior Ryan Martin and the offense set the tempo for the rest of the game. After the teams exchanged first-quarter fumbles, the Pirates missed two straight chances to take a lead. A botched field-goal attempt and a turnover on downs at the Bulldog 5 kept the game scoreless. However, the defense was up to the task with an interception and a takeaway on downs.
Junior quarterback Andy Meadows capped a late first-half drive with a 3-yard dive over the goal line, making it 7-0 with senior Riley Billieu’s point-after touchdown.
Pirate senior Derek Chambers ended another sustained drive with a 16-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0 with 10:19 left in the fourth. The Pirates went for it on fourth-and-6 from the 23, with Meadows hitting senior Elliott Green for Green’s second catch of the night.
The defense ensured its fifth shutout of the season with a fumble recovery by senior Brice Emsweller and an interception by senior Shane Ploeger.
Unofficially, the Pirates ran 63 plays to Batesville’s 31. Greensburg gained close to 250 yards on the ground. Martin tallied 161 of those, while Meadows completed three passes for 47 yards, unofficially.
Greensburg has yet to allow a point in the postseason, but the Pirates’ offense will pose a challenge for Indian Creek next week. The Braves (9-2) advanced in the other semifinal game, 28-8 over Beech Grove (5-6) to set up a second straight winner-take-all clash with the Pirates. The Braves held off a late Pirate rally for a 20-13 win in the sectional final last season.
