Pirate Harriers Host Cougars, Two Other Teams

Greensburg — The Greensburg cross country squads hosted a four-team meet Tuesday afternoon, against South Decatur, East Central and Hauser. It was the Pirates' first home meet of the season.

East Central won both the boys' and girls' races. In the boys' competition, East Central placed six runners in the top 10 to take the team win with 20 points. Hauser's Darren Brown led the race from start to finish and won with a time of 17:58.

East Central's girls won with four finishers in the top 10. Senior Julia Thomas paced the Lady Trojans to the victory, winning the race in 21:40.

South's girls took second place with 46 points. Senior Kristy Hamilton led South with a time of 24:09 for sixth place overall. Senior Rylie Buening finished ninth in 24:58, while Emily Mapes placed 10th in 27:17. Senior Julie Mapes (14th) clocked a 28:27, while Paje Smiley (19th) tallied a 33:25.

South's boys took third place with 62 points. Cameron Agnew placed third overall, clocking a 19:27. Sam Studler took 16th in 21:10, while Dillen Brannin placed 19th in 22:12. Brandon Overlock finished 25th in 22:55.

Other South boys:  Tyler Wamsley, 28th (24:15); Evan Kirchner, 29th (24:21); Mitch Watkins, 32nd (25:03); Brandon Smith, 33rd (25:43); Austin Smith, 36th (30:14).

"I was pleased with overall team placement," said South coach Bethany Fromer. "We had a few personal bests and we will keep working each meet for those times to (improve)."

South next hosts county rival North Decatur Thursday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m.

Greensburg junior Liz Richardson came in fourth place overall and broke 24:00 for the first time. She covered the 5k course in 23:43. Ericka Carman turned in her fastest time of the season, placing eighth in 24:44. Junior Tori Helms finished 11th in 27:22, while sophomore Brooklyn Craven placed 18th in a time of 31:07.

Junior Colin Evans led the trio of Greensburg harriers. He came in fifth in 18:51, his best performance of the year by over a minute. Ethan Sebastian was the next Pirate to cross the finish line. He placed eighth in 19:25, his fastest time of the season. Freshman Clayton Moore, coach Troy Davis said, continued his steady improvement with another personal best time. He placed 37th in 31:05, breaking the 33:00 barrier for the first time this year.

The teams return to action next week when they travel to East Central for their invitational on Tuesday Sept. 6.
