Hammersmith Optimist Youth for July

Greensburg — John Hammersmith, a student at North Decatur High School, is July's Greensburg Optimist Club Youth of the Month.

John has earned a 3.71 GPA as a North Decatur student. He has played football and basketball, has been part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters HI FIVE program, is a 4-H member, a member of the National Honor Society, the safety committee and FFA. John is also the 2013 Senior Class President and Captain's Counsel.

John enjoys fishing, hunting, boating and riding ATV's with friends.

In the future, John hopes to play football for either Valparaiso University or Ball State University. He wants to major in Meteorology and Climatology at either of those schools with the future hope of working for the National Weather Service or becoming a broadcast meteorologist for an Indiana TV station.

    He is a 1940 graduate of New Salem High School, and he later married Ruth Ann Austen Nov. 26, 1944.
