Greensburg —
Dear Editor,
I have followed the debate over the budget, and I have to make a comment on it.
The Democratic Party is saying they have to cut 30,000 government jobs and are blaming the Republicans if they don’t pass their legislative agenda.
This brings back to me the time back in the late 1980s when George Bush Senior was president; they passed a law closing military bases and told President Bush if he didn’t sign it they would not pass his budget, shutting down the government.
President Bush agreed they had to shut down some of the bases, but to do it over a five year period. The Democrats said no.
They had to shut down within a year and President Bush would have no say and set up their own board to oversee it.
But let’s get to the main point: they put one million one hundred and some government people out of work which was only the start of it.
It takes three to four people to supply each government employee, so they actually put five million people out of work, approximately. And who did they blame in the 1992 election? President George Bush Senior.
Sincerely,
Ralph M. Zeigler
