Lester W. Aumann, 90

Greensburg — Lester W. Aumann, 90, of Adams County, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at Woodcrest Nursing Center.

He was born Jan. 22, 1922 in Adams County, the son of William C. and Della (Busick) Aumann.

He married Evelyn L. Thieme Aug. 10, 1947 in Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Decatur, and she passed away July 27, 2012.

Lester was a retired farmer and was self-employed in home construction for 37 years. Lester greatly enjoyed his family and spending time with nature. Additionally, he never met a stranger and took pleasure in meeting and talking with people, both on the construction site and in life in general. In later times, he and Evelyn moved to Woodcrest where he continued meeting people and enjoyed playing cards and putting puzzles together.

Lester served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

He received the Purple Heart, Battle Stars, Victory in Europe Ribbon and participated in the Allied invasion of Normandy in France, called D-Day, in 1944.

Lester was also a member of the St. John Lutheran Church-Bingen, the men’s club of the church, and American Legion Post #43, in Decatur.

Lester is survived by his son, Thomas Aumann, of Decatur, daughters Kayleen S. (Rick) Ellinger, of Greensburg, and Janice (Tim) Grover of Decatur; sisters Irene (Lorenz) Steele of Decatur, and Glenys Counterman, of Hoagland; nine grandchildren: Jeremy Aumann, Kellie Hadi, Brad Aumann, Shane McBride, Chad McBride, Crista Elias, Michael Grover, Tyler Ellinger and Zach Ellinger; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons: Timothy W. and Ricky L. Aumann, and a grandchild, David Aumann.

Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, and one hour prior to funeral service Wednesday. Friends will also be received from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Woodcrest Porter Auditorium.

Funeral begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 at St. John Lutheran Church-Bingen, Rev. Peter Brock officiating.

Burial follows in St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery-Bingen.
