Rose Ann Schwering, 79

Greensburg — Rose Ann Schwering, 79, Westport, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 23, 1933 in Jennings County, the daughter of Joseph B. and Lenora R. (Zapfe) Diekhoff.

She was raised in Jennings County and had lived most of her life in Decatur County.

She was a 1951 graduate of Jennings County High School a 1954 graduate of St. Vincent’s School of Nursing.

She had worked as a registered nurse at Muscatatuck Developmental Hospital for 17 years.

She was a caregiver to family and friends. She was a member of the St. Denis Catholic Church.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, cooking, football tailgating and watching football.

She married Berthold C. “Nick” Schwering at the St. Denis Catholic Church June 12, 1956, and he preceded her in death Sept. 5, 2009.

Survivors include her daughters, Karen (Tony) Harmeyer of Greenfield, Linda (Bill) Disher of Indianapolis, Marilyn (Dan) Adams, Sharon Schwering and Debbie (Matt) Keele all of New Palestine; her sons, Kevin Schwering of Westport, Paul Schwering of North Vernon, Bernard Schwering and Melvin Schwering of Indianapolis; her sisters, Esther Hill of Russiaville and Helen Kramer of Greensburg; her brothers, Alfred Diekhoff of Westport, Art Diekhoff of North Vernon, Maurice Diekhoff of Columbus, Bernard Diekhoff of Westport and Lawrence Diekhoff of North Vernon; her 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Francis Diekhoff; grandsons, Christopher Schwering and Nicholas Ray Schwering and daughter-in-law, Mary Theresa Schwering.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12 at St. Denis Catholic Church, Father William Turner officiating.

Burial will follow at the St. Denis Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bass and Gasper Funeral Home with a rosary being prayed at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics or the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.
