Greensburg — Joseph R. Karns, 94 of Akron, Ohio, passed away on Monday, July 26 at the Pebble Creek Nursing Home in Akron.

He was born on April 4, 1916 in Mentone, Ind., to parents Cliffton Karns and Flossie (Jefferies) Karns, who both preceded him in death. He married Esther A. (Shaw) Karns on Oct. 27, 1946 and she preceded him in death on April 18, 1990.

He is survived by: son Walter Karns of Akron; daughter-in-law Jeannette Karns of Waldron; half brother John Coplen of South Bend; half sister Ann Cooper of Keystone Heights, Fla.; grandsons Brian (Xeng) Karns, Preston Karns, Kevin Karns and Allen (Brooke) Karns; great-granddaughters Codi Rasor and Emily Karns; great-grandson Wyatt Karns; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; half brother Sam Coplen; and grandson Clayton Karns.

He was a farmer and a veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion in Morristown, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Freeport United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31 at the Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory. Carmony-Ewing Chapel in Shelbyville. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31 at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Interment will be at Concord Cemetery.
