John Lewis Colson, 79

Greensburg — John Lewis Colson, 79, Greensburg passed away Feb. 25, 2013, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 3, 1933, in New Pennington, the son of Harley Bertice Colson and Estelle Cruise Colson.

John choose to support his family when he was only 16 by leaving school to farm full time on his family farm. He married Loretta J. Ramer in 1952, and they bought their own farm in 1964, where they have lived for 48 years. John worked at all of the following: Hillenbrand Factory, Earl and Everett-Milk Truck, Chevrolet Dealership (Mechanic), McCoy and Douglas Dealership (Mechanic), Mitchell Veneers (Mechanic), Lucas Motor Freight, Anderson Trucking, and OK Trucking. He retired in 2009 from USF Holland as a supervisor. John was a 4H and Cub Scout Leader for many years, a Scout Master at First Baptist Church, and a former member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church.

Survivors include: His wife: Loretta J. Colson; children: Ronald (Sandi) Colson, Cheryle (Jim) Hampton, Kevin Colson (Annette Niehoff), Lora Lee (Peter) Oliger; eleven grandchildren; and nine Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Harley Bertice Colson and Estelle Colson; step-mother: Bernice Colson; and Great granddaughter: Marisa Colson.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, with funeral services starting at 11 a.m., Friday, March 1, all at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Rev. David Thompson will be officiating. Burial will follow at Rossburg Cemetery, New Point. Memorial contributions can be made to the 4H Club of Decatur County or to Morning Breeze.
