Henry A. Ernstes, 98

Greensburg — Henry A. Ernstes, 98, of Greensburg, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013 at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg.

He was born in Houston, Texas on March 16, 1914, the son of Lawrence B. and Christina (Fisse) Ernstes.

He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1931. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Agricultural Stabilization Committee, the Decatur County Historical Society, and the Knights of Columbus. Henry had worked for the Greensburg Ice Company, was a salesman for KOVA Fertilizer, worked at Johnston Wholesale and farmed. He loved to play Euchre, collect arrowheads and other Native American artifacts.

He was married to Ruby D. Houston Jan. 23, 1940, and she preceded him in death April 3, 1995.

He is survived by two sons: William L. (Kathy) Ernstes, Greensburg, John H. (Edie) Ernstes, Greensburg; one daughter, Sr. Christine “Chris Ann” Ernstes, Millhousen; one brother, J. Howard Ernstes, Greensburg; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; one brother, Ralph Ernstes; two sisters, Kathryn Bailey, and Sr. Jean Frances Ernstes.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 4 at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.  

A rosary for family and friends will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Funeral Services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg, Rev. John Meyer officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Building Fund or to the Henry and Ruby Ernstes Marion University Scholarship Fund through the Decatur County Community Foundation.
