John Lewis Colson, 79, of Greensburg, passed away Feb. 25, 2013 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 3, 1933 in New Pennington, the son of Harley Bertice Colson and Estelle Cruise Colson.
John chose to support his family when he was only 16 by leaving school to farm full time on his family farm.
He married Loretta J. Ramer in 1952, and they bought their own farm in 1964, and have lived there for 48 years. John worked at all of the following: Hillenbrand Factory, Earl and Everett-Milk Truck, Chevrolet Dealership- mechanic, McCoy and Douglas Dealership- mechanic, Mitchell Veneers-mechanic, Lucas Motor Freight, Anderson Trucking, OK Trucking, and retired in 2009 for USF Holland as a Supervisor.
John was a 4H and Cub Scout Leader for many years and Scout Master at First Baptist Church, and a former member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta J. Colson; children Ronald (Sandi) Colson, Cheryle (Jim) Hampton, Kevin Colson (Annette Niehoff), Lora Lee (Peter) Oliger; siblings Bill Colson, Pauline Ponsler, Mary Lou Agrusso; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harley Bertice Colson and Estelle Colson; stepmother Bernice Colson; and great-granddaughter Marisa Colson.
A visitation for family and friends is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, also at the funeral home. Rev. David Thompson will be officiating. Burial will follow in Rossburg Cemetery, New Point.
