Ray Glen Sweet, Sr., 83

Ray Glen Sweet, Sr., 83, of Adams, passed away on Nov. 11.

He was born on June 1, 1926 to James Blain and Cecile Sweet, who have preceded him in death. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1943. He married Marie M. Anderson on April 21, 1950, and she survives.

He served in the US Army from 1944 to 1968 and received many honors including a bronze star medal. He was a member of the Welsh-Crawley-Kramer American Legion #129 in Greensburg.

After retiring from the Army, Sweet along with his wife, maintained a farm and opened a restaurant, Sweet’s Cafe, in Waldron. Sweet enjoyed travel, woodworking and raising and breeding Maltese dogs. He attended Living Water Ministries in Greensburg.

He is survived by wife Marie Sweet of Adams; sons Earl W. Sweet of Adams, Ray (Joni) Sweet, Jr. of Greensburg, and Oren Sweet of Greensburg; daughters Glenda Sweet of Greensburg, Jackie (Brian) Ruble of Greensburg, Barb (Verna) Hatfield of Jabzy, Ky. and Carol (Christopher) Shepherd of Shelbyville; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandhchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister Ruth Tucker of Shelbyville; brothers Don (Sally) Sweet of Shelbyville and Bob (Ann) Sweet of San Antonio, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father James Blain Sweet; mother Cecile Sweet; daughter Carol “Annie” Sweet; three great-grandchildren; brothers James Sweet II, Arnold Sweet, Jack Sweet and Billy Sweet; sisters Vivian Fuell and Justine Aulby.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 14 at the same location. Pastors Ray Sweet III and Bill Leak will be officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
