Robert F. “Bob” Conwell, 86

Robert F. “Bob” Conwell, 86, of Westport passed away on Sunday, Nov. 1 at

the Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility at Columbus.

He was born on August 10, 1923 in Westport to James Lyle and Margaret

(Denton) Conwell and was a lifelong Westport resident.

He graduated from Sandcreek High School in 1941 and attended Indiana

University. He was a road construction engineer for Triangle Construction

Company at Bedford and was the owner of the Westport Natural Gas Company

from 1962 to 1988. He was a member of the Decatur County Historical

Society, a past President of the Westport Kiwanis Club, a member of the

Westport Baptist Church and Westport Masonic Lodge #52 F. & A.M. He was

also an avid supporter of the Westport Covered Bridge restoration.

He served as a paratrooper with the Marines during World War II, serving

with the 5th Marine Division of I Company with the 3rd Battalion of the

25th Marine Regiment. He was wounded at Bougainville and Iwo Jima and

received the Purple Heart.

He enjoyed gardening and traveling, was a history buff and enjoyed having

“weiner” roasts at his home and inviting people of the community to attend.

He had a strong Love of family, the Westport Community and his country.

He was married to Wilma Jean Keith in Greensburg on Jan. 17, 1947, and she

survives.

He is also survived by his daughters Judy (Jim) Matthews of Salem, Janice

Conwell of Sheboygan, Wis. and Maribeth Holcomb of Westport; his sons Lyle

Keith (Linda) Conwell of North Vernon and Kevin (Lisa) Conwell; as well as

eight grandchildren, six step grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Lucille Irwin and

Betty J. Shera; his brothers James L. Conwell and Eugene Conwell and his

grandson Charles Wayne Brown.

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be conducted on Thursday,

November 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home at Westport with

Rev. David A. Scaggs and Rev. Steve Malone officiating.

Burial will be in Westport Cemetery with Military Graveside Services.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. with a Masonic Lodge Service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of South Central Indiana

through the funeral home.
