Leon "Red" Moffett, 85


Leon "Red" Moffett, 85, of Greenfield, died March 13, 2010, surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Letts, IN, on June 16, 1942, to the late John D. and Sarah (Miller) Moffett. He was the last remaining member of his generation of the Moffett family.

A Disabled American Veteran of World War II, he served in Normandy and Europe. After moving to Indianapolis, Red met and married Reta Meredith on June 10, 1948. He retired from Eli Lilly after thirty-three years of employment. Red was a member of Brookside Masonic Lodge #720 F. & A.M., The Scottish Rite, and The Murat Shrine, were he was a clown. He participated in clown acts for the Shrine Circus, never missing a performance in thirty years. Red was an avid fan of the Colts, Pacers, and college basketball. He was a kind and generous gentleman, who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Reta; sister-in-law, Cora B. Moffett; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Alex, Dale, Jack, and Joe; sisters, Willa Bewley, Claudia Neely and Bonnie Bewley.

Calling will be Wednesday, March 17, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St., during which time Masonic services will be held. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
