Norman Conrad Schlemmer, 86
Norman Conrad Schlemmer, 86 of Greensburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday June 30, 2009 at the Morning Breeze Nursing Home Greensburg. He was born Sept. 19, 1921 in Vicksburg, Miss., the son of Norman C. & Jessie (McCoy) Schlemmer. He was a graduate of Greensburg High School as well as a graduate of Indiana University. He was a member of the U.S. Army serving as 1st LT 3rd Platoon, K Company 3rd Battalion, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. During the Battle of the Bulge he was wounded earning the Purple Heart with the Bronze Star, & the Combat Infantryman Award. During his many years as a businessman in Greensburg, he owned with his father in law Arthur M. Lynch the Firestone Store and served as Chairman of the Board of the Decatur County Bank and negotiated its sale to Fifth Third Bank and served as Chairman of Fifth Third Bank of Indiana until his retirement. He also served as the Indiana State and National Treasurer of the American Legion and as its Chairman of Military Affairs Committee. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash from the Governor. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Greensburg, American Legion, ELKs, and Scottish Rite. Throughout his life serving his family, friends and community always came first. He married June (Lynch) Schlemmer on April 16, 1944 in Greensburg and she survives at the home.
Other survivors include his three sons, Norman C. (Judy) Schlemmer of Greensburg, Arthur H. (Linda) Schlemmer of Cincinnati, & David F. (Jayne) Schlemmer of Greensburg; one brother, Carl Schlemmer. He is also survived by four granddaughters, Kimberly (Rock) Arnold of Watertown, S.D.; Julie (Ben) Greenlee of Indianapolis; Courtney N. Schlemmer of Cincinnati, & Brittany June Schlemmer of Cincinnati; five grandsons, Norman "CHIP" wife Lisa Schlemmer of Greensburg, Robert (Rachel) Schlemmer of Greensburg, Arthur Evan Schlemmer of Phoenix, Ariz., Christopher (Ann) Schlemmer and Kyle Schlemmer both of Indianapolis and many great grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman & Jessie, his step father, Herbert Oles and one brother, Commander Robert Schlemmer.
There will be no public viewing. A private family service is scheduled. Burial will follow in the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Decatur County or to the First Presbyterian Church.
