Greensburg — Howard Wayne "Zig" Ziegler, 81, of Carmel passed away on Sunday, July 25 in Indianapolis.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1928 to Charles Elmer and Myrtle (Hunnicutt) Ziegler. They preceded him in death as well as an infant brother Harold Edward Ziegler. Wayne graduated from Clarksburg High School in 1944 and Canterbury College in 1948 with a BS in Education, Indiana University in 1952 with a MS in Education and earned his SuperintendentÕs License from Butler University. He worked at Clarksburg and Vevay and was principal at New Point and Sand Creek Schools in Decatur County.

On July 29, 1950, Wayne married Virginia Meyers of Batesville. To this union, four children were born. Daniel (Linda) Ziegler of Fort Worth, Texas, Thomas (Cindy) Ziegler of Dublin, Ohio, Melinda Ziegler of Indianapolis and Elizabeth Glass of Lawrence Twp., Indianapolis. They have five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews.

Wayne left teaching and moved to Carmel in 1963. He was an educational publishers representative selling library and textbooks for 31 years. The last 21 years with Prentice hall. He was secretary-treasurer of the Indiana State PublisherÕs Association for 23 years.

Zig was very active at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the session for two terms and served as clerk. He was on nearly 20 stewardship campaigns, taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, gave childrenÕs sermons and coached the Church Blue Team for 13 years. He participated in Dial-A-Prayer and numerous other activities.

Wayne was a member of the Carmel Clay Library Board for 16 years, serving as president during a building campaign. He was a member of the Carmel Lodge F&AM, Scottish Rite and the Murat Shrine. He has been a member of Carmel Golden K Kiwanis for the past 15 years.

He officiated high school and college football for 27 years, always interested in all sports at various levels. He participated in golf for the past 20 years. Zig also loved to travel, especially to historical places.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 29 from 9 - 11 a.m. followed by funeral services, all at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 1605 E. 106th St., Indianapolis, with burial at 4 p.m. in St. John Cemetery in Batesville.
