James Albert “Red” McQueen, 85

Greensburg — James Albert “Red” McQueen, 85, of Connersville, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 at Heritage House Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center where he had been a resident since Oct. 25.

He had been ill since April.

“Red” was born September 13, 1927 in Owsley County, Ky., one of 11 children to Robert and Laura B. Howard McQueen.

As an infant, he moved with his family to Decatur County. In 1946, he began employment with Rex Manufacturing and its successor Visteon, retiring in 1995 after 54 years of service. Additionally in 1946, he  owned and operated a grocery store in Clarksburg, and for a time, the Bay Shore Inn at Lake Santee.

He married Mary Lewis Aug. 7, 1960 in Decatur County. They moved to Connersville for residence. Mary passed away March 7, 1997.

During the Korean War, “Red” served with the U.S. Army, entering into service Nov. 3, 1950. He was later promoted to the rank of sergeant, receiving his honorable discharge in 1952.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Connersville as well as being a 53-year member of the American Legion Post #1, VFW, 40 & 8 and AMVETS.

During the City of Connersville’s sesquicentennial, he received the First Place Award for “the Best Beard Contest.”

Survivors include a son, David C. McQueen and his wife Teresa of Indianapolis, a step-daughter, Vicki Beatty and her husband Robin of Connersville, two brothers, William H. McQueen of Rushville and Hayden G. McQueen and his wife Peggy of Pershing, a sister, Mabel Hofer of Cincinnati, Ohio, two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchildren, a son-in-law, Mike Alsman of Falmouth, and fiancé, Doris Anderson of Connersville; he was also blessed with a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.

Aside from his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janette Alsman, his parents and four brothers, Vercil, Everett, Orice and Delbert McQueen and three sisters, Zola, Pearl and Marion McQueen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home, 1704 N. Grand Ave., Connersville, IN (765-825-2287), Rev. Richard Watt officiating.

Burial will be in Dale Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council – visitation will be held at the Funeral Home from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.
