Sr. Alma Louise Kohnen, 101

Greensburg — Sr. Alma Louise Kohnen, 101, of the Srs. of St. Francis in Oldenburg, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at the convent.

Born April 28, 1911 in Newport, Ky., she was the daughter of Florence (Kilp) and George Kohnen.

She entered the convent Dec. 27, 1928 and made her final vows July 2, 1934.

She was an elementary teacher for 49 years, recognized as an exemplary primary teacher who stressed a well-rounded educational and religious curriculum. She used her loving personality and artistic ability to make her classroom colorful and enjoyable for her students. She taught at St. Anthony’s in Evansville, St. Ann’s in Hamburg, St. Mary’s of the Rock in St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s in St. Leon, St. Paul’s in New Alsace, St. Martin’s in Lanesville, St. Leo’s and St. Catherine’s in Cincinnati, Ohio, and St. Peter’s in Chillicothe, Ohio.

After teaching, she spent 15 years working at St. Peter’s parish in Chillicothe, the convent’s communication office and archive’s office. She retired in 1997, but continued as a Minister of Praise until her death.

Sr. Alma Louise is survived by her sister, Florence, and brothers Clarence and Harold.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Estelle and Lillian. Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m., Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M. officiating. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Srs. of St. Francis, P.O.
