Sr. Mary Emmett Lawrence, O.S.F., 93

Sr. Mary Emmett Lawrence, O.S.F., 93 of the Srs. of St. Francis in Oldenburg, passed away Tuesday, July 28 at the convent.

Born March 23, 1916 in Dayton, Ohio, she is the daughter of Pauline (Wendeln) and Emmett Lawrence.

She entered the convent on Dec. 8, 1935 and made her final vows July 2, 1941. Sr. Mary Emmett was an elementary teacher and principal for 47 years. Schools included St. Joseph’s in Shelbyville; St. Mary’s in Rushville; St. Michael’s in Brookville; St. Mary’s in New Albany; St. Mary’s in Lanesville; St. John’s in Dover, Ind.; St. Joseph’s in St. Leon, Ind.; St. Lawrence in Lawrenceburg; St. Monica’s in Kansas City, Missouri; Immaculate Conception in Old Monroe, Missouri; St. Aloysius and St. Bonaventure’s in Cincinnati; St. Ann’s in Hamilton, Ohio and St. John’s in Middletown, Ohio. In 1985 she returned to the Motherhouse where for 10 years she served as secretary of the Life Development Office and Librarian of Special Collections before retiring in 2003.

Sr. Mary Emmett is survived by several nieces and cousins. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Ruth Schweller, Irene Roth, Sr. Helen Lawrence O.S.F. and brothers Wendell and George Lawrence.

Visitation is Friday, July 31 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with burial in the convent cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Srs. of St. Francis, P.O. Box 100, Oldenburg, Ind., 47036 (www.OldenburgFranciscans.org).
