Oscar J. Settles, 81

Oscar J. Settles, 81 of Waldron, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, July 15.

He was born in Shelby County on Oct. 10, 1927 to parents Bernard Settles and Matilda (Heppner) Settles who preceded him in death. He was married to Eileen (Hoeing) Settles on August 1, 1964. She survives.

Other survivors include: one son, Matthew (Angela Schwering) Settles of Shelbyville; one daughter, Edna (Tom) Corlett of Shelbyville; and one brother, Allen Settles of Flat Rock. He had seven grandchildren: J.D., Elise and Elizabeth Stephens; Jacklynn Corlett; and Brooke, Katie and Keith Settles. Oscar J. Settles was preceded in death by: one son, Richard Settles and one brother, Virgil Settles.

Oscar J. Settles worked as a farmer all his life, having retired in 2008. He graduated from Waldron High School in 1946, and was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church. He was also involved with Father Seger council, Knights of Columbus of St. Vincent’s and the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He loved farming and spending time with his family.

Visitation is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 17 at the Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Vincent Catholic Church on Saturday, July 18. Burial will follow at the St. Vincent Catholic Cemetery in Shelby County, with Rev. Paul Landwerlen officiating.

Memorials can be made to the Hospital for Children Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or to the St. Vincent Catholic Church care of the funeral home.

Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Graveside military services will be conducted by local veterans organizations.
