Virgil Lee Roberts, 68

Greensburg — Virgil Lee Roberts, 68, Kent, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 at Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville, Ky.

He was born Oct. 6, 1943 in Vevay, a son of Joe B. Roberts and Christine Reed Roberts.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Rita A. Chasteen Roberts of Kent; his daughter Dena L. Marshall and her husband Kenny of Westport; his son, Brett C. Roberts and his wife, Beverly of Deputy; his grandson: Keshaun J. Roberts; his sisters: Doris Kroger of Hanover, Bess Cutshall and her husband, Sam of Baton Rouge, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents,; his brother, Dwight Roberts (died April 1, 2009), his step-sister, Sandra Powell (died March 28, 2011); his brother-in-law, Ron Kroger (died Nov. 15, 2003); his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Dorothy Chasteen.

Virgil was raised in Switzerland County until the age of 15, moving to Jefferson County.

He was a 1963 graduate of Southwestern High School, residing the rest of his life in the Hanover community.

Virgil was inducted into the United States Army on Oct. 2, 1967 in Louisville, Ky.

He rose to the rank of Private E-2 during the Vietnam Era.

He was honorably discharged Sept. 4, 1968 from the Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Penn., receiving the National Defense Service Medal.

He was united in marriage Feb. 25, 1967 in Austin, Ind. to Rita A. Chasteen.

This happy union was blessed with a daughter, Dena and a son, Brett.

Virgil was employed in maintenance and as a school bus driver for the Southwestern School Corporation in Hanover for 20 years. He also had helped Tom Meier farm near Hanover for 40 years.

Virgil retired from the Town of Hanover from the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Virgil had resided near Kent, for most of his life and he was a Christian. He enjoyed membership in Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion; the Hanover Masonic Lodge No. 652 F. and A.M.; he was also a member of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years.

Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Pastor Chuck Justice officiating

Burial to follow in Kent Cemetery in Kent.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Flag presentation at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion.
