With the holidays in full swing, Sheriff Allen of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department (DCSD) has offered a few safety tips for shoppers.
“The less opportunity you give someone who’s going to commit a crime on you, the better off you’re going to be,” said Allen.
The biggest piece of advice is to stay alert while in the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle. Check your surroundings and your car for anyone who may be hiding, or who may look suspicious. Park in well-lit areas, and be ready to enter your car as quickly as possible.
Never carry large amounts of cash. Instead, use checks or cards.
Shop in large groups, and teach your children to go to a security guard or store clerk if separated.
Sheriff Allen added that many of these tips are more relevant for people shopping in large cities, and that local theft incidents do not tend to increase during the holidays.
To avoid online identity theft, use only websites of good repute, and which have security certificates, Allen added; your web browser should have a “lock” symbol somewhere on the window.
Try to use only one credit card, allowing for easier tracking of how you’ve made your purchases. Always print receipts in case of any problems, and be aware of online-store privacy policies; some stores sell personal information.
