It was a busy year for Honda Manufacturing of Indiana (HMIN).
The facility announced in January that its 2013 Acura ILX luxury sedan would be produced solely in Greensburg. The new model hybrid-vehicle serves as an entry-level sedan, and the company hoped to target younger car buyers when it was unveiled at a celebratory event in late April.
Production of the new vehicle led to Honda’s announcement in July that it would add 300 manufacturing jobs in order to meet production expectations planned to occur in Spring 2013. The company simultaneously announced a hybrid version of its popular Civic to be manufactured in Greensburg.
The Greensburg facility earlier broke ground by becoming the first plant in North America to produce a hybrid vehicle with the roll-out of the Acura ILX in April.
The new vehicles being produced led to far-reaching changes across the continent.
“Increasing production in Indiana will provide us with increased flexibility to adjust model mix at our other plants in North America,” HMIN Senior Vice President Bob Nelson said in July. “All of our plants build multiple models on the same line, so our ability to adjust between models and among plants allows us to optimize use of our production capacity.”
