Greensburg —
On Saturday, the Greensburg Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) will be taking 100 children shopping for clothes and toys at Greensburg's Walmart SuperCenter.
Decatur County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Snyder, president of the FOP, said that local kids participating in the program are chosen by receiving lists of underprivileged children from school nurses.
“They work with the kids every day, and they know who needs help,” said Snyder.
The FOP coordinated with the Daily News Cheer Fund, which also provides to families in need each year, to make sure no family was receiving assistance from multiple locations.
The FOP will go shopping with each child and his or her family individually, with $100 set aside for clothes and $20 for a Christmas toy.
The money came from business' and individual donations, and more will probably come from FOP members.
Students from the Greensburg Honor Society will also be participating, visiting Walmart with the families for new clothes.
“We’ll get whatever we can buy them for that $100,” said Snyder. The list includes coats, boots, baby clothes, socks, underwear, pants, jeans, hats and gloves.
While the child will be shopping, the parents will get the final say in each purchase.
Dep. Snyder explained that the FOP would like to cover all the children on the list, but there’s only so much that can be done. Regardless, Snyder said that 15 kids was considered a large group when he started participating seven years ago, so the 100 kids participating now is definitely an improvement.
Last year, 85 kids were taken shopping.
