Westport —
Two high school students from South Decatur have been selected to participate in “Down Under Sports” for their improved performances on the field.
Best friends since kindergarten and currently juniors at SDHS, Chris Meadows, 17, and Luke May, 16, have been given an opportunity travel to Australia and Hawaii.
They will compete against other high school-aged athletes from other countries should they make the trip.
Students are chosen by considering if the student went to regionals in their sport of choice, and their times and scores from the beginning and end of the sports’ season.
Meadows is planning on participating in 90, 110, 200, and 300 meter hurtles, and possibly two other events.
Meadows’ mother, Kim, is also planning on traveling with her son. “I hope to take a bunch of pictures and take notes,” said Kim. She intends to share her son’s accomplishment with the community.
“He’s very, very excited. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Kim.
Chris wants to represent Decatur County, the state of Indiana, and the United States as a whole through his athletic endeavors, according to Kim.
The trip will cost Chris $5,000 to travel to Australia for nine days, and to Hawaii for three days.
Kim is looking for sponsors for her son, and Chris’ friend, Luke, will be doing likewise. Kim has appealed to local businesses, and hopes to appeal to the community for donations as well as the rest of the Meadows family. Kim also hopes to eventually host a benefit dinner for her son.
Luke May competes in discus throw and shot put, and improved his discus throw by 30 feet.
Anyone interested in sponsoring one of the boys can make checks payable to Down Under Sports, or can make payments online at http://www.downundersports.com. The checks will not go to the individual families, but to the institution. Down Under Sports is not affiliated with South Decatur High School.
The Meadows can be reached at 812-614-2045. Sponsorship for Chris Meadows can be sent to P.O. Box 301, Westport, 47283.
Sponsorship for Luke May can be sent to P.O. Box 272, Westport, 47283.
