The Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section has released statistical information on methamphetamine lab incidents in 2009, and Decatur County was near the top of the list once again.
According to a release from ISP Sgt. Noel Houze of the Versailles District, Decatur County had 78 “lab incidents” in 2009, representing the fourth highest number of lab busts in the state of Indiana.
Overall, the statistics point to a rise in meth activity statewide. During 2009, the Indiana State Police responded to 1,343 lab incidents which is a nearly 27 percent increase over the 2008 number of 1,059.
“These incidents resulted in 1,031 arrests by the Indiana State Police for various violations associated with manufacturing methamphetamine,” Houze explained. “This represents nearly a 40 percent increase over last year’s arrest total of 739.”
Neighboring counties that make up the Versailles ISP District include Dearborn, Jefferson, Ohio, Ripley and Switzerland. In total, those counties had 27 lab incidents, or about one-third of the number in Decatur County. After Decatur County, which had 78 lab incidents in 2009, the next highest was Ripley County, with 14.
While the numbers of meth labs busted in other counties might seem low compared to Decatur County, Houze pointed out that the numbers do not necessarily mean other meth labs do not exist in those areas. While the Indiana State Police remained committed to waging war on the illegal manufacture, sales and use of illicit drugs, the public continues to play a pivotal role in the battle. According to Houze, ISP Troopers cannot be everywhere at once and they rely on information and tips from the public to help do their jobs. Anyone with information concerning the possible manufacture or sales of methamphetamine, or any other drug, is encouraged to call the ISP Versailles Post at 812-689-5000 or (800) 566-6704. Citizens can also call the statewide Methamphetamine Tip Line at (800) 453-4756. Callers can always remain anonymous if they wish.
