Hopeless Hollow to provide haunting performances

Greensburg — Previously known as the “Haunted Woods,” Greensburg’s Hopeless Hollow Haunted Trail will be running every Saturday in October.

The haunted trail began Oct. 6 but will be continuing Oct. 13, 20, and 27. Adults are charged $5 to enter and children under the age of 10 are $3. Coordinator Doug Burton said the opening weekend went great, and he has a positive outlook for the rest of the month. Visitors may begin arriving around 7:30 p.m. and lines close around 10:30 p.m.

This Saturday, planned for this weekend only, there will be a blackout event from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Groups will walk the trail with a single glow stick as their guide.

Burton said the idea stemmed from when people with epilepsy asked if there could be a weekend without strobe lights, “I thought, hey, let’s turn off all the lights and do the trail in the dark,” said Burton. There will be caution tape lining the entire trail so people do not stray from it. Cellphones and flashlights are not permitted.

The event is intended to scare adults. If parents think their children may frighten too easily, children may wear flashing lights which will alert the actors to be a little less scary. “We will terrorize adults,” said Burton, “But if you got kids with ya we’ll try and stand back.”

The walk will begin with a hayride and will be set with macabre props, and actors who jump in the pathway of visitors. The Hopeless Hollow generally takes around 30 minutes to navigate.

There are some rules intended for safety.

Visitors have been asked not to wear masks so the masks may not hinder vision, and running is discouraged so people do not become too frantic and panicked and harm themselves. Rules are stated upon entry to the Haunted Hollow. Actors have been instructed not to run after the visitors (too far), though they may stalk threateningly.

The Hopeless Hollow is in its eighth year. Burton has run the show primarily with his family and friends, and intends to continue the attraction.

One weekend previously brought 1,800 visitors. This year sees notable new props including a real casket and a life-sized Jack-in-the-Box.

The Greensburg Youth Football is planning to attend to serve hot chocolate and concessions.
