St. Mary’s Youth Ministry will be lurking (and looking) for foodstuff from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 (today) to give to Greensburg's Bread of Life.
In their sixth annual Trick or Treat for a Cause, communities all over Greensburg can expect the St. Mary’s kids to be asking for food donations.
Kids dressed to scare will be giving special attention to six neighborhoods: Country Club Estates, Mill Ridge Addition, Ryle Addition, Fairview Addition, Lee’s Addition, and Greenview/Sunset Addition. Kids from grades 7 to 12 will be scouring the neighborhoods for donations, not of the sugary kind, but for food with a bit more substance.
Bread of Life is in particular need of condensed soups, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pastas, salad dressings, drink mixes, boxed potatoes, and canned tuna and salmon. Bread of Life also appreciates monetary donations, and any checks can be made to Bread of Life.
The children have been told to identify themselves as soon as a person answers the door with, “We’re from Saint Mary’s and we’re collecting donations for Bread of Life.” The Trick or Treat for a Cause is taking place a week before normal trick or treating, so the kids will not be mistaken for their candy-seeking counterparts.
Last year, St. Mary’s Youth Ministry had 175 students participate. The kids brought in more than 6,000 pounds of food, and approximately $1,300.
Tanya Seibel, youth minister, said 150 to 200 children are expected to participate this year.
Parents can drop off their students at the new gym at 6:15 p.m., with pick up at 9 p.m. after awards are distributed.
Upon return to the gym, the grade level that collects the most food will win a pizza party, and the grade level that collects the most money will win an ice cream party.
Bags of candy will also be awarded to the best costumes, including the best serious costume, the best group costume, and the funniest costume.
