Man In Bypass Crash Died From Medical Condition

Greensburg — A crash on the bypass that left one Hartsville man dead was not the cause of the fatality according to the results of the autopsy.

According to a press release from the Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze, Timothy A. Tatman, 57, of Hartsville, was headed west on the State Road 3 and 46 bypass just west of Greensburg when his vehicle unexpectedly crossed the median and slammed head-on with a semi headed east. The ISP suspected a medical incident may have caused Tatman to cross the median.

According to Coroner Doug Banks, Tatman did experience a medical incident, which caused his death, not the collision with the eastbound semi. Banks said Tatman experienced a medical episode, which likely caused him to cross the median and rendered him unable to avoid colliding with the oncoming traffic.

"He was not coherent enough to know what he was doing," Banks said. "The injuries from the wreck are not what he died from."

Banks said Tatman likely would have survived the injuries suffered in the crash. However, the wreck compounded the medical emergency and proved to be fatal.

ISP Tpr. Joe Loyd is still leading the ongoing investigation.
