Snowfall, Season Cause for Care
The first significant snowfall and real sign of winter materialized in Greensburg and Decatur County this week, reminding local drivers of the threats the season to brings to roadways.
The Indiana State Police are doing what they can to encourage drivers to be safe, as snow covered roads and hazardous driving conditions can occur on a daily basis. This week, southeastern Indiana received its first look at winter driving with a light snowfall that left roadways covered and slick. ISP Lt. Marty McKinney, Commander of the ISP Versailles District, offers these tips to remain safe: always buckling up; allowing plenty of time to reach the destination; clearing all windows of ice and snow completely; removing snow from the car’s hood, roof, trunk, head lights and tail lights; being aware of bridges, underpasses, overpasses and intersections where ice tends to form first; not using cruise control on wet or slick roads; avoiding abrupt stops and starts, slowing down gradually and keeping wheels rolling to avoid losing traction; using headlights even during daylight hours; increasing the following distance between vehicles; and decreasing the speed according to the road conditions.
While traveling during the winter months, motorists should also keep the following items in the car with them in case of emergency, according to the ISP: warm blankets; shovel or some other digging tool; charged cell phone or cell phone with car charger; jumper cables; sand or other abrasive material; first aid kit; flashlight; large candle and matches or a cigarette lighter.
Motorists should also ensure their gas tank is always at least half full in case they become stranded during frigid conditions. An idling engine will only use about one gallon of fuel per hour.
During inclement weather citizens are urged to avoid contacting their local, county or state police dispatch centers to obtain current road and weather conditions. Instead, citizens should tune into their local radio or television stations or visit the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) road and weather Website at www.trafficwise.in.gov or call (800) 261-ROAD (7623) to get the latest road and weather updates.
