Devotionals Highlight Final Fifth Sunday Performance
This Sunday, Greensburg’s First Presbyterian Church will host the final
concert in the Fifth Sunday series.
The Historical Society of Decatur County has worked in collaboration with the church to provide a concert series on the final Sunday of months containing five of them throughout 2009. This final concert is another free community event, intended to offer musical experiences the area might not otherwise have.
This week, Mark and Michele Murray, of Anderson, will play a collection of classical, religious and Christmas-themed pieces. Their program will
include arrangements of such pieces as What Child is This, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art and O Come, O Come Emanuel as well as some classical pieces that may prove a bit less familiar, they explained.
Mark Murray earned a doctorate in trumpet performance and music history from Indiana University. He was awarded the distinguished performer's certificate during his studies at IU. He was raised in Montoursville, Pennsylvania and attended Duke University in Raleigh, North Carolina prior to relocating to Indiana for his masters and doctoral level studies. He has been a professor at Anderson University for 29 years and has taught a broad curriculum during his tenure there. He is the principal trumpet for the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and participates in a program called Book Readers and Horn Blowers which pairs children's stories about historical figures with a brass quintet and a brass petting zoo following each performance.
Michele Murray earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Stetson University in Deland, Florida. She went on to earn a master's in music theory at Indiana University. She has been an integral part of the
freshman music student experience at Anderson University for 29 years,
where she teaches keyboarding, music theory and aural comprehension among other courses. She has had multiple books of arrangements published, each featuring a set of pieces arranged "in the Style of the Masters." She accompanies the choir at the First United Methodist Church in Anderson as well as stepping in for the organist when necessary.
Mark and Michele Murray have been married for 29 years and have performed together for longer than that. They have two children. Andrew, 23, is a first-year law student at the University of Dayton, and Daily News assistant editor Elizabeth Bailey is their daughter.
The concert will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29 at the First
Presbyterian Church.
