South Central Indiana Walmart Customers Fight Hunger
GREENSBURG – Customers and associates at the Greensburg Walmart store, along with other South Central Indiana stores, helped to contribute more than 5,569 pounds of food to area food banks during Indiana Senior Senator Richard G. Lugar’s statewide “Hoosiers Fighting Hunger” food drive. (Note to editor: See South Central store listing at the end of the story.)
Across the state Walmart customers contributed 106,602 pounds of food out of the total of 275,402 pounds collected by Walmart and two other food retailers during the September program.
“Donating more than 4.5 tons per day, thousands of Hoosiers answered the call,” said Sen. Lugar. “This level of generosity puts new emphasis on National Hunger Action Month and will help stock the shelves ahead of the holiday season.”
Walmart has been a long-time supporter of food banks across the Hoosier state.
“Walmart is proud to cosponsor Hoosiers Fighting Hunger with Senator Lugar," said Jason Wetzel, Walmart Sr. Public Affairs Manager. "Walmart realizes the immense strain on Indiana food banks given the current economic situation and is thankful to all who participated in the program. Each donation brought us closer to ensuring no Hoosier goes hungry this fall."
When Sen. Lugar first heard that food banks across the state had seen a 30 percent increase in demand last year, he created the “Hoosiers Fighting Hunger” food drive. Lugar reached out to Walmart and two other retailers for help in the statewide campaign.
Hoosiers were able to purchase pre-filled bags of groceries for $3, $5, or $10 from displays in each of the stores.
“I deeply appreciate Walmart partnering for the first time in this food drive,” said Sen. Lugar. “In visits to each of the stores last month, I witnessed Hoosiers’ generous spirit exemplified in the large stacks of food ready for the local food bank.”
Lugar’s Good Samaritan Hunger bill was reintroduced on June 22 in order to make permanent provision for farmers and small business owners to receive tax deductions for donating products to food banks, pantries and homeless shelters. Provisions of this bill were temporarily extended in the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, but will expire at the end of this year.
