Churches, Youth Groups Flip Burgers To Feed The Hungry

Volunteers flipped burgers in a tent outside of Rural King, Saturday, to raise funds for the Greensburg Community Bread of Life.

This was not an initiative of the local soup kitchen but rather an act of giving for the youth groups and congregations of Alert United Methodist Church and New Bethel United Methodist Church. The two groups have joined forces this year as they approach the 30-Hour Famine, an annual event to raise funds to combat hunger through World Vision.

For Alert, it is the third year the youth group has participated in the Famine. For New Bethel, it is the first time. Still, the 30-member cooperative group they have formed has set the ambitious goal of raising $3,000 to combat hunger on an international scale.

Leading up to the main event in December, the group is raising funds by conducting a program called “Flush Away Hunger.” Members of the churches are paying $5 to have a brightly painted toilet put in someone’s front yard for a day. They also offer the “Royal Flush” with his and hers toilets for $20. Within one week, $350 had been raised through this amusing initiative, youth leader Lorie Williams explained.

On a local level, the youths are also working to support Bread of Life, the North Vernon Food Pantry and a child they are sponsoring, Williams’ husband Roger noted at the Saturday event.

Other volunteers at the cook-out explained that the 30-Hour Famine for these local youths will take place on Dec. 27 and 28. It will begin with a group breakfast. For the next 30 hours, the group will not eat. The process, volunteers explained, helps young people understand a bit of what hunger feels like. Functionally, it works like a walk-a-thon with sponsors donating to support those going hungry for the cause.

The group will stay at the armory in North Vernon on the night of the famine, one volunteer explained, and will participate in an “Amazing Grace Race,” in which they will follow clues and perform acts of service throughout the community.
