The American Legion, a veterans organization founded to benefit those who served during war, was founded in 1919.
On Monday, the American Legion Post 129 of Greensburg commemorated the 91st anniversary of the organization’s establishment with a cake ceremony at the local post. Guests who were at the Legion were treated to a cake baked and prepared by Tom Imel, a member of the American Legion. Imel, who served in the United States Marine Corps, had once baked a cake that weighed 950 pounds that had to be sliced with a sword, he said.
American Legion Post 129 commander Don Bultman received the very first piece of the red, white and blue cake.
Next on the horizon for the American Legion is the upcoming Memorial Day celebration and remembrance ceremony at South Park Cemetery on Monday, May 31. A free lunch for all veterans will follow the Memorial Day event at the American Legion Post 129.
The American Legion is a congressionally chartered mutual-aid veterans organization of the armed forces and was founded to benefit those veterans who served during wartime period as defined by the United States Congress. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis and has approximately 3 million members in more than 14,000 posts across the globe.
