Three Girl Scouts from troop 190 have put their noodles together to give back to the community through a spaghetti dinner.
The dinner will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., March 16, at the Lake Santee Community Center, located at 13 South West Wrenn Parkway, Greensburg.
The price of admission is a jar of spaghetti sauce, and a box of spaghetti.
Melissa Garno, troop leader of 190, explained that, by organizing and hosting the dinner, Kendall Garno, Alexis Jarmin and Lindsey Rousseau (all 13 years old), aim to earn their Silver Award, the second highest award achievable in Girl Scouts.
Attainment of a Silver Award requires a sustainable project of at least 50 hours of work, Garno said.
The girls decided to hold a spaghetti dinner to benefit of the Sunman Food Bank, located at 8917 East County Road 1300 North, Sunman (812-623-2159).
“Spaghetti goes a long way,” said Garno, who explained that the spaghetti donors will be fed, and the leftover spaghetti and sauce will go to the Sunman Food Bank. The Girl Scouts will receive a donation from a local store to start the dinner.
The “sustainable” part of the project, said Garno, will involve a cookbook that uses common ingredients in the pantry.
The girls are not taking monetary donations and cannot receive food donations before the dinner. If people are interested in giving to the Sunman Food Bank, said Garno, Sunman’s food truck will be at Walmart from 12 to 4 p.m., and Main Street Market from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 9.
According to Sarah Crain, membership development manager, the girls from troop 190 will receive recognition for their work at the Girls of Distinction, June 8. Also receiving recognition will be local troop 322, which gathered materials for tornado victims last year as their Silver Award project.
