A horrific crash around dawn Saturday has left one local man clinging to life in Methodist Hospital.
According Greensburg Police Chief Brian Heaton, Taylor Litten, 21, of Greensburg was traveling south on U.S. Highway 421 South at 6 a.m. Saturday. Just south of Wilder Street, Litten lost control of the vehicle, careening off the road. He struck a tree, which caused the car to flip. It came to a rest off the road near the bridge just before the entrance to Fairview Addition, Heaton said, totaling the car.
When officers arrived on the scene, they believed Litten was already deceased.
"It was a near fatality," Heaton said.
Emergency responders from Decatur County EMS were able to stabilize Litten and rushed him to Decatur County Memorial Hospital where he was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
"He was in pretty bad shape, so we got him out of there as quickly as possible and shipped him off to Methodist," Heaton said.
According to family, Litten is listed in critical condition and has been in a coma since his arrival in Indianapolis. Family and friends have kept a constant vigil by his bedside.
The crash is still under investigation, Heaton said. Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, but the Chief said they were reserving judgment until the results of Litten's toxicology tests were available.
In addition to Decatur County EMS and the GPD, the Decatur County Sheriff's Department and Greensburg Fire Department assisted at the scene.
