More than 200 runners and walkers woke up early and celebrated the final day of the Greensburg Sesquicentennial by participating in the 5K and 10K Tree City Heritage Run and Walk Saturday morning.
“I cannot believe the turnout,” event coordinator Karen Higginbotham said following her welcome.
Registration began bright and early at 7 a.m. at the Greensburg Community High School parking lot. The race was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., but it had to start a few minutes later to accommodate the high volume of walkers and runners who showed up.
Serious jogging enthusiasts and casual runners and walkers alike filed up at the starting line with a police escort. The 5K runners and walkers started first, followed a few minutes later by the 10k participants. The course had the walkers and runners journeying around the high school and the Greensburg Elementary School, and steering them through the roads surrounding nearby factories.
Following the race, Higginbotham invited the participants to the Greensburg Community Field House for the awards ceremony. Inside, runners were given bananas and Gatorade to re-hydrate and replenish themselves.
Four overall winners were announced, in addition to the several first place finishers in each category who each received medals. In the 10K, Taryn Owens was the first female to finish, while Jeff Buhr was the first male to complete the 10K race. In the 5K, Carla Asher and Matthew DeSilva were the first to finish.
Each of the four overall winners were given a gift basket including a Sesquicentennial puzzle, a plaque, a gift certificate and Sesquicentennial commemorative ornaments, belt buckles and a small flag. WRTV 6 personality Paul Poteet was also given an award by Higginbotham for his participation in the 10K and helping to kick off the festivities.
When thunderstorms rolled into Greensburg at about 1 a.m. on Saturday morning, Higginbotham said she was concerned about the race. But the soggy start did provide some benefit.
“I’m thankful we had our little storm last night,” Higginbotham explained. “It made it a little cooler today.”
