Westport Youth Jailed After Tussle With Police

Celebrating the second snow day in a row, four Westport teenagers took their merrymaking to a dangerous level late Wednesday night and into the early morning on Thursday.

Jonathan P. Grider, II, 19, 307 S. West St., Westport, and three other unnamed juveniles were arrested at 1:43 a.m., Thursday by Officer Terry Robinson of the Westport Police Department. Grider was charged with public intoxication, minor consumption, resisting law enforcement and the battery of an officer. Battery of an officer is a class A misdemeanor, carrying a sentence of up to one year in jail nad up to $5,000 in fines.

Robinson explained that the Westport PD received a call from a concerned parent regarding a group of kids with booze in an empty, bedraggled house in town. Robinson responded to the call and upon investigating the home found the foursome inside.

Before he could do anything else, Robinson said he saw Grider preparing for a fight and the two began to duel.

“He got mouthy and very vulgar and then came at me,” Robinson said. “Jonathan got a little rambunctious and decided to fight. He was highly intoxicated.”

Lunging at the officer, Grider fell to the ground. Robinson began to help him up.

“From that point, it just went downhill,” Robinson said.

Wrestling with Grider, Robinson was able to pin him to the ground and slap the handcuffs on him. He set Grider on a chair of the porch of the home where he had been found drinking, but the cuffs, the seat and a stern warning were apparently not enough to keep Grider grounded.

Robinson said he turned to deal with the three others when Grider switched back into attack mode and came at him again, still cuffed. Using his only means of combat available, Grider began to throw his legs and kicked Robinson in the shins multiple times.

Westport officer Rob Goodfellow arrived at the scene to help detain Grider and offer his help to Robinson. Goodfellow entered the fray and had to wrestle with Grider before putting him in his police cruiser, Robinson said. On their way to the car, he said Grider tried unsuccessfully to land a headbutt on Goodfellow.

Though he was removed from the scene and being escorted to the Decatur County Jail, the officers weren’t finished dealing with Grider.

“In the car, he was still being vulgar and kicking windows,” Robinson said. “He was headbutting the safety glass in the car all the way to the jail. We have 22 minutes of audio of him headbutting the glass.”

Grider was handed over to the jail without serious incident. As of Thursday afternoon, Grider had appeared in court but remained an inmate of the Decatur County Jail awaiting a $505 bond.
