A Sweet Event to Help Kids with Diabetes

In order to support families in Decatur County who live in the balance of diabetes, three area moms joined forces to create Carnival for a Cure, which will be held Saturday at the New Point Community Building.

Wendy Bohman and two other moms of kids with diabetes have been working to organize games with prizes, a craft booth, a basket raffle and refreshments for the event, which places funds in the Children with Diabetes Fund in Decatur County. Having funds on hand, Bohman explained, could help families with medical bills and equipment as well as educational programs for the schools and scholarship money toward attendance at diabetes camps.

Bohman noted insurance providers have changed their funding for diabetes testing materials, such as glucose testing strips, a change that places added strain on finances for families working to find a balance for members with diabetes. New technologies in glucose monitoring and insulin pumps can make life feel more normal, but they come with a price - sometimes a high one.

The other aspects of the fund help to insure a solid support network within the schools and through friendships formed at camps that cater to children with diabetes. Often, Bohman noted, children with diabetes feel singled out. Feeling alone is one of the difficult aspects of dealing with the autoimmune disease, she noted, so knowing others face the same challenges is important for their well-being.

Aside from knowing they are not alone, children with diabetes also benefit from others understanding the disease, something educational programs in the schools could help to foster. Bohman feels all children could benefit from more of a focus on healthy eating and activity levels, not to mention an understanding of how the body works and what is at stake if things do not work as expected.

For the kids, however, Saturday’s event also promises a fun time and an opportunity to win prizes.

“They hope they won’t have to help work the booths so they can just enjoy the games,” Bohman said with a smile.

A vibrant life with diabetes is becoming more attainable with every step toward support and awareness, she noted, and area families will have the opportunity to make a difference at the carnival and beyond. Progress is also on the horizon for the Children with Diabetes support group, which meets at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. Bohman reported five moms attended the first meeting to share information and begin forming a support network throughout the county. While the meeting for this month has been canceled, she is grateful for the hospital’s support and the financial support of the Decatur County Community Foundation.

Carnival for a Cure will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the New Point Community Building.
