Two Decatur County residents are dead following a single vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 421 North Tuesday night.
According to information provided to the Daily News by the Decatur County Sheriff's Department (DCSD), the accident occurred at about 9:44 p.m. Tuesday.
Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen, DCSD deputies, Decatur County EMS, Adams Volunteer Fire Department, Greensburg Fire Department and St. Paul Town Marshals responded to an emergency call placed shortly before 10 p.m.
Upon arrival at the scene, responders found a vehicle, believed to be a Mercury Sable, had left the roadway of U.S. Highway 421 North and County Road 550 North, subsequently colliding with a tree on the passenger's side.
Dead at the scene was 48-year-old Janie Mandrell.
The driver of the vehicle, Janie's husband, 54-year-old Ralph A. Mandrell, was transported from the scene by Decatur County EMS to Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH). He died at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis early Wednesday.
It is believed that both victims died as a result of internal injuries sustained in the accident.
The crash site was investigated late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning by Indiana State Police accident reconstructionists.
DCSD Lt. Eric Blodgett assisted at the scene as did deputies Chris Hellmich and Steve Snyder.
The cause of the crash is still being determined.
At the accident scene Tuesday night, Sheriff Allen noted that it appeared the driver had crossed left of center on the highway, then the vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons and crashed into the surrounding tree line. The brunt of the impact was suffered on the passenger side of the vehicle, which resulted in catastrophic damage.
The DCSD is awaiting toxicology results from the victims, though the Sheriff mentioned that there were no signs indicating the crash may have been alcohol-related at the scene.
