YMCA Gets A Kick Out Of Recent Program Grads

GREENSBURG - The Decatur County Family YMCA is proud to announce the newest batch of Little Kicker Graduates in 2009. The soccer-based class helped kids ages 3 to 5 years old to kick, trap, pass, and dribble their way to victory.

Session 5, 2009 graduates are: Emma Flinn, Jonathan Flinn, Grayson Hellmich, Demetrius Hoover, Luke Huff, Karson Scheidler, Cash Thompson, and Blaine Wagner.

These students successfully completed six weeks of soccer class. They learned the basics of trapping, dribbling, passing, scoring, and goalie skills. The class met on Wednesday evenings from 5:15 to 6 p.m. The class also taught more than just sport skills. The class instructor, Brad Wessel, wrapped up each session with a special coloring sheet and discussion for the kids over the YMCA's Four Core Values (Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility).

"It is important for the kids to learn more than just how to score a goal. The lessons they learn over the Four Core Values are ones that they can use their entire lives." commented Devon Brown, YMCA Program Director.

The final class was a time for family fun. The students brought their parents out on the fields and were responsible for teaching them all that they had learned. The last class also pitted the parents against the kids in a special game. As a special treat at the end of the final class, the players were presented with their very own soccer trophies. For many, this was the first trophy in their collection. This program is a great example of how the YMCA "Builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities."
