Greensburg —
Jimmy Colson opened the mailbox on his front porch Thursday night to find a thick stack of mail, including one surprise envelope tucked at the bottom of the box.
The envelope was sort of heavy, he said, and bore no stamp, just his name.
"I figured it was something from my dad or something," he said.
As he reached the bottom of the mail pile, he arrived at the envelope and cut it open. Inside, he found a folded piece of cardboard containing two silver dollars and an Indian head penny. On it was written an apology for taking the coins from Colson's locker about 30 years ago. It was signed only "Dumb Kid."
Colson remembers the week he took the coins to Greensburg High School as a sophomore in 1976. He had purchased them at an auction and wanted to show a few of his friends. Back in those days, he explained, the upper lockers at the high school could be bumped upwards and opened without the need for a combination or key. Still, he left the coins there all week, and when Friday came, he found his locker open at the end of the day with no coins inside. While he was saddened to no longer have the coins, he said he wasn't particularly angry even then.
"I told myself it was dumb to leave them in there," Colson noted.
He noted at the time, each silver dollar was worth about $5 and the Indian head penny about $1. He remembers the plastic wrapper of one of the coins as well as the date on each.
"I have a pretty good memory for stuff like that," he noted.
The coins he found in his mailbox Thursday night are the same ones he left in his locker 34 years ago.
"I guess their conscience was bothering them 34 years later," he said of the mystery person who returned his long-lost coins.
He said that whoever the person is, he would like them to know there are no hard feelings, and he would not disclose their identity if they contact him.
"You did the right thing, and your apology is accepted," Colson said. "I would like to hear from you and give you one of the silver dollars for being the bigger person after all these years. Getting them back means more than whatever they are worth. It's just so awesome someone had the courage to do that.
