Spirit of Women finishes another year of good health

Greensburg — Decatur County Memorial Hospital’s (DCMH) Spirit of Women (SOW) chapter rounded out another year of events Thursday night at Knights of Columbus Hall with its annual Cheesecake & Cheer.

SOW Coordinator Annie Wilkison told the Daily News that nearly 300 women attended.

The event included a presentation by comedian Mary Armstrong-Smith and included special recognition to DCMH director of dietary services Connie Million, who recently completed an Associate’s degree in Dietetics.

And of course, there was no shortage of sandwiches, sweets, snacks and champagne.

The evening’s featured speaker, OB GYN specialist Dr. Mahnee Dinsmore, MD, served as something of a preview for the upcoming formal ribbon-cutting of DCMH’s new Women’s Care facility Dec. 6.

Mahnee, along with Dr. Lisa Davis, are the chief physicians of the new facility, which saw its first patient Oct. 12.

During her brief presentation Thursday night, Dinsmore laid out a sketch of her medical philosophy, telling the almost-exclusively female audience that good health is largely a matter of one’s outlook on and approach toward life.

“You need to have an intention to be happy every day,” she said. “Tell yourself when you wake up in the morning, ‘Wow, this is going to be a great day.’”

Being a happy person, she added, requires work and involves learning how to see the positive in sometimes seemingly negative circumstances.

As an example, Dinsmore related a story about her 15-year-old daughter. The doctor used to get extremely frustrated by being forced to wait for her daughter in the mornings, but took her own advice and developed a reading habit as a way to pass the time while waiting.

“Now,” Dinsmore said, “I find myself hoping my daughter will be a few minutes longer so I can finish a few extra pages.”

The Open House and formal ribbon cutting for the new DCMH Women’s care facility will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, at 955 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 96. The event will include free refreshments and prizes.
