Westport Scuffle Ends In Arrest

An early morning police dispatch to a Westport home on Tuesday resulted in the arrest of a Greensburg man, who was later booked at the Decatur County Jail.

Joseph D. Taylor, 39, 317 Forsythe Street, Greensburg, was arrested and booked at 1:59 a.m. Tuesday on charges of disorderly conduct, domestic battery, criminal trespassing and resisting law enforcement. No bond was set.

According to Westport Police Chief Todd Hampton, WPD officer Rob Goodfellow responded to the call to the apartment of Taylor’s girlfriend, with whom he has children.

Goodfellow had previously given Taylor a “no trespassing” order for the residence a few months ago, which was broken.

When Goodfellow arrived at the scene Tuesday, the battery had already occurred on his girlfriend and Taylor allegedly headed back into the residence, attempting to get away from law enforcement, Hampton reported. At that point, he was trespassing again. While there was no actual fight or fists thrown during the arrest, Taylor did reportedly try to resist Goodfellow by throwing an elbow, but those charges were later dropped. The girlfriend did decide to press charges against Taylor for the battery, Goodfellow noted.

Hampton explained that this was not the first time that the Westport Police Department had dealt with Taylor. He said that an event that was “almost the same thing” occurred only a few weeks ago.

Upon his arrival at the Decatur County Jail, Taylor submitted to a breathalyzer test. According to Hampton, Taylor blew a .22 blood alcohol level.

A charge of disorderly conduct is a Class B Misdemeanor, which upon conviction carries a penalty of up to a $1,000 fine and up to 180 days in jail. Domestic battery charges, as well as the criminal trespass charge and the resisting law enforcement charge, are all Class A Misdemeanors. A conviction on a Class A Misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and up to $5,000 in fines.
