Greensburg —
Thursday afternoon, the Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library awarded prizes to the winners of its "Race into Reading" Book Cover Design Contest, part of the GoGreensburg community project.
Children's librarian Jill Pratt told the Daily News that the contest was open to pre-school age children, Kindergartners and students grades 1 through 12.
The top 10 were awarded Thursday afternoon with two Qualification tickets to the Indianapolis 500, two tickets to Greensburg's Wolf Theatres and a free paperback book, Pratt said.
Additionally, the 10 winners also got to meet and pose for pictures with Mayor Gary Herbert at Thursday's awards ceremony.
"Students were given a list of three possible titles to design their book covers around," Pratt explained.
Those three titles were: "The Day ______ Won the Indy 500"; "Diary of a Racecar Driver"; and "Elephants Don't Drive Racecars."
The winning Book Cover titles included, "The Day a Dog won the Indy 500," and "The Day Yoda Won the Indy 500."
Winning contestant Grace Marley is a fifth-grader at St. Mary's. Her cover was titled "The Day Red Lantern won the Indy 500."
"I was inspired by a prize I got in a McDonald's Kid's Meal," Marley said. "It was a Red Lantern action figure. Plus, I'm a big Green Lantern fan."
Marley hopes to attend the Indy 500 Qualifications with both parents and would like to see either "The Three Stooges" or "Mirror Mirror" with her free movie tickets.
Decatur County Tourism Director Melanie Maxwell, who's helping oversee the GoGreensburg initiative, said she was thrilled to have the library's participation in the project.
"This is a huge undertaking," Maxwell said. "We've only been planning since December, but we've managed to involve a wide range of groups from around the community to participate in the festivities."
Those festivities, according to Maxwell, will include an oversized big-wheel race around the courthouse, a midget car race, a talk by noted Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway historian Donald Davidson, a 5k run, a parade grand marshaled by Decatur County son and Indy 500 participant Greg Leffler, and much more.
GoGreensburg, Maxwell further explained, is part of the larger "Back Home Again in Indiana" statewide contest celebrating the history and tradition of the Indianapolis 500. The top prize is a $20,000 grant to the winning community.
