Greensburg —
A single-vehicle accident along State Road 3 near County Road 800 South resulted in a Jennings County woman being air-lifted from the scene Wednesday.
The driver, identified as Edith LaMaster, 81, suffered several injuries in the crash, and was transported by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.
Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen told the Daily News that LaMaster suffered head injuries and, possibly, several broken bones.
According to Allen, witnesses to the accident stated that the car — a 1997 Buick Century Limited — was headed south on SR3 when LaMaster drifted left-of-center and into the oncoming lane, then left the road.
“She hit an embankment,” Allen explained, “lost control and rolled the vehicle twice. At this time, we don’t know what caused her to veer left or to leave the road.”
Allen added that first responders indicated they’d cut LaMaster out of the seat belt when extricating her. The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m.
Fire responders from the Letts Volunteer Fire Department and the Greensburg Fire Department participated in the rescue operation, while the Westport Fire Department set up a helicopter landing zone at SDHS, the sheriff said. Deputy Mike Woodhull is investigating the accident.
Grocery items purchased by LeMaster were strewn about the badly-twisted wreckage.
No word on LeMaster's condition following her transportation to Indianapolis was available by press time Wednesday.
